Sedih? Kecewa? Cepet-cepet nyari “mandi oli” buat mendongkrak posisi? Hmmm … kalau ini menyangkut website bisnis, pasti. Tapi kali ini saya malah seneng. Read the rest of this entry »

It is not my own writing, but find it very interesting and want as many people to read as possible, especially those with high demand of IT in their organization. It answers a lot of question, definitely. It obviously leaves or even create new open questions. Whilst it talks specifically to Perl programmers, I believe it commonly applies to other languages as well. Anyway, enjoy !!

I was invited to a wonderful dinner party (I swear it wasn’t too spicy Sarah!) with some St. Louis Perl peoples this week while I’m here on business. At one point we were talking about hiring programmers, specifically Perl programmers.

We agreed on the following:

(1) Finding good programmers is hard in any language. And that a good programmer can be as effective as 5-10 average programmers.

(2) Average pay rates between equivalent programmers are out of sync and are based more on the language used than the skill of the programmer.

(3) You don’t need to hire an expert in language X, you can and should look for expert programmers that are willing to learn language X. An expert can easily cross over from being a novice in any language in a matter of a few weeks.

(4) You should seriously consider allowing your expert developers to telecommute full-time. Restricting your search to programmers who live in your area or are willing to move limits the talent you can acquire. Arguments regarding “face time”, productivity, etc. can easily be nullified when you look at how some of the largest and most successful Open Source projects such as Linux, Apache, and Firefox are developed by individuals rarely living in the same time zone or even country.

(5) We love Perl and think it’s a great language that you graduate to after you have been forced to use less agile languages such as Java, C/C++/C#, etc. Not necessarily a first language you get your feet wet with and then move onto a *cough* “real” language. Read the rest of this entry »

Be a boss, not a friend. If someone does not perform, kick him out immediately. Giving another chance to low performers are just a waste of time, energy, money, even your own and your corporate credibility.

I have been a programmer for years before leading a team and finally manage overall IT operations. Obviously being a superior needs different skill, different talents, even perhaps different personality. I am confident with my technical insight, but am “I the right leader for my team?” have been in my mind for years. Read the rest of this entry »

Finally, for so many reasons I decided to go back to where I used to be. I have been heavily in Linux environment when I worked for Jaron Direct developing online systems in Java platform to be deployed in Sun machines runing Solaris OS. One of my project in collaboration with Fantomaster was written in Perl and has been one of the world’s most successful black-hat SEO method. It was a very old age when we talk about CGI (mostly written in Perl) instead of PHP. Read the rest of this entry »

I have been in IT industry for more than 17 years now in various focuses, application programming, MIS, database design, online systems, e-commerce, and other sides of online marketing. With more things I wanted to do, the less spare time I have. No more time for novels, movies, paintings, or pimping car which have been my life-time hobbies. No complains, I enjoyed every minutes of my life, even the bad times which I believe came with positive effects awaiting to be discovered later on. Read the rest of this entry »

It was nice to find this theme I am using for my website now. It reminds me to the place where I started to get introduced to online marketing at its very first inception. Far to the right end of the main picture was the office where I worked and where I lived. About in the middle was Staak und Beirich, a nice small bookshop run by nice family. The two story shops was too small and crowdy with bookshelves soaring up to the ceiling, but the collection was amazing. Focusing in technical books especially IT related, just named the title of the newest published book, and they had it somewhere. For me, the best of all was that most of books they sold were in English. This shop was a weekly regular schedule to visit, every weekend after walking along the Zeil. Had to be Saturday morning, as normal hours in the country was a bit strange. Shops closed at about 6-7 pm during weekdays, a half day on Saturdays, and completely closed on Sundays.

Really miss the fireworks too, which normally held along the river, and clearly visible through my windows. Also the market at the city plaza a few weeks before Christmas. I really miss those days, but I think I prefer to be here, with the smile of both the sun and the love of my life.
