I have been using social bookmarking to boost my website SEO performance. Many SEO practitioners beliefed that social book marking only significantlu boosted website positioning on SERP for short period, after which it will sink back down. Whilst it is true, by my experience it is worth to do, and with a little more sweat sustainability is also possible. I personally think that the buzz dragging many to leave social bookmarking as a beneficial situation. Read the rest of this entry »

Sedih? Kecewa? Cepet-cepet nyari “mandi oli” buat mendongkrak posisi? Hmmm … kalau ini menyangkut website bisnis, pasti. Tapi kali ini saya malah seneng. Read the rest of this entry »

Teknik SEO Indonesia. I have been in long discussion with Keke (seokita.com), a friend who dedicates his career in SEO for … hmm, I am not sure how long. Well, at least as long as I know him, which is about 6 years. He has been trying to convince me about his theory which he thinks is going to be the future of SEO. Future? Well, okay, maybe not that dramatic. At least the new trend which will remain for at least a few next years … just like link-trading in the past. Read the rest of this entry »

seo-bible2.jpgAs everything in life – IT in particular – SEO is a continuously evolving filed. Apart from a few fundamentals, almost everything in SEO continuously changes in a matter of day. Keeping up with the latest update in the industry is just as important as understanding the fundamental parts.

I have pre-ordered SEO Bible as soon as it comes to publication schedule, about three months before it finally published on December 17th 2007. So I believe I have been among the first buyers. Regular international shipment – as always – took almost 4 weeks, so it has just arrived on my desk before the weekend, January 19th 2008. As a long awaited stuff, it immediately took my whole weekend to explore. Read the rest of this entry »

Matt Cutts

I had a few posts about search engine, and when we talk about search engine, as the most prominent one, mentioning Google is inevitable. As one of the most popular Googlers - of course in addition to Sergey Brin, Larry Page, and Eric Schmidt - Matt Cutts is a name which is mentioned quite frequently. Why is he so popular? Is it only because he is a senior engineer in Google? Well, Google has at least hundreds of senior engineer. Is it because he is actively blogging? Hmmm, millions of people blog these days. It may be the combination of both … likely. Read the rest of this entry »

Ever in a situation where we do not want search engines to index part (or even whole of) a website? Imagine if we have a hotel reservation website, and there is a “book this hotel” link on each page featuring a particular hotel. The booking form linked is actually one single page, which dynamically has different URL when accessed from different hotel page. Say we represent 500 hotels worldwide. Search engine will identify that we have 500 pages of individual hotels (which is correct) and 500 individual booking pages (which is misleading). What is the potential mess? Angels say that SE will index them and you will have the same amount of “fake” info as the real one. Evils say you will be in trouble for duplicating content.

Theoretically there are ways to get this sort out, basically by telling search engines which part of your website you do not want them to index. You may have heard robots.txt, meta no follow, and meta no index as ways to do it. I just found quite an interesting interview with Matt Cutts, Google’s senior engineer, which will tell us the right and wrong of its usage and of search engine, Google in particular, respond to these directional technique. A year ago you had to wait days if not weeks to see your content indexed by Google. Now many web pages are indexed in 5-10 minutes. However, bear in mind that it does not mean that you will get your website get to the first page within that small fraction of time. Indeed, it is getting harder and taking more time … every day.
